This short, family-friendly excursion is designed especially for locals and visitors from across the Balonne and South West region to experience the excitement of heritage rail returning to Thallon.

Travel behind the magnificent Queensland Railways BB18¼ Class steam locomotive No.1037, one of Queensland’s most iconic steam locomotives. Step aboard our heritage carriages and enjoy the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of authentic steam rail travel as you journey through the heart of Queensland’s grain country.

Take in the wide open plains, experience the rhythm of the rails, and be part of this historic day for Thallon and the South West community.

🕒 Your Journey

Saturday 28 March 2026

12:30 pm – Depart Thallon Railway Station

Your steam-hauled train departs Thallon heading east through the open farmlands towards Gradule, travelling across the vast plains that define the South West.

1:10 pm – Arrive Gradule

Short stop so the train can shunt and run around.

1:30 pm – Depart Gradule

Enjoy the return trip to Thallon aboard the heritage steam train.

2:00 pm – Arrive Thallon

Step off and continue enjoying the festivities at the Thallon Rail Heritage Centre Grand Opening.

Duration: Approximately 1½ hours return trip

Please arrive at Thallon Railway Station at least 15 minutes prior to departure.

Due to the historic nature of the heritage carriages, wheelchair access is not available.
